空きびんと2杯のコーヒー

Thanks Giving休暇を跨いで１１日間の日本への小旅行。

授業を１週間休むという離れ業をやってのけて実現した今回の帰国。

学期中の帰国という初の試みは、かつてないスリルを僕に与えた、
と同時にその感覚を肴にした酒は格別であったことは言うまでもない。

１か月ぶりの投稿。
師走といわれる１２月に相応しい内容の投稿をと。
そして出てきたこの話。
僕の大好きなお話を、ストレス社会でアップアップなあなたへ。



「空きびんと2杯のコーヒー」


When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 Hours in a day is not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and 2 cups of coffee.
（あなたの人生が自分ではどうにもできないくらいにさまざまな問題に直面したとき、１日２４時間では到底足りないと感じるとき、空ビンと２杯のコーヒーを思い出してください。）


A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.
（一人の哲学の教授が、クラスにある物をもって現れました。クラスが始まると、彼は言葉もなく大きな空ビンにゴルフボールをいっぱいに詰めました。）


He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.
（そして彼は生徒達にビンが一杯か尋ねました。生徒達はそのビンは一杯です、と答えました。）


The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.
（そこで教授は小石の入った箱を取り出して、ビンの中に流し入れました。彼がそのビンを軽く振ると、小石はゴルフボールの間の隙間を埋め尽くしました。）


He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.
（そして彼は生徒達にビンが一杯か尋ねました。生徒達は再びそのビンは一杯です、と答えました。）


The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full.
（そこで教授はさらに砂の箱を取り出してビンに流しいれました。もちろん砂は隅々にいきわたり、ビンを埋め尽くしました。彼は再びビンは一杯か尋ねました。）


The students responded with an unanimous "yes."
（生徒達は口を揃えて「もちろん」と答えました。）


The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.
（そこで教授は机の下から２杯のコーヒーを取り出しました。彼はそれを一杯になっているビンに注ぎいれ、砂の隙間を埋めていきました。生徒たちは笑いました。）


"Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things, dream, family, children, health, friends, and favorite passions, things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.
（クラスの笑いが落ち着いたころに、「さて」と教授。「私が言いたいのは、このビンはあなたの人生そのものを象徴しているということ。ゴルフボールは人生において大切なこと。夢、家族、子供、健康、友達、自分が情熱を持つもの。これらはあなたが全てのものを失ったとしても、あなたの人生を満たしてくれるもの。」 ）


The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, house, and car.
（小石は仕事や家や車などを象徴するもの。）


The sand is everything else --the small stuff."
（砂はそれ以外のすべてのもの、とても小さなもの）


"If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life.
（彼はこう続けました。「もし砂を先にビンに入れたとしたらそこには小石やゴルフボールのためのスペースはないでしょう。それは人生においても同じこと。」）


If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you.
（もしあなたが日々小さなことに時間とエネルギーを費やすことばかりすれば、本当に大切なもののための時間はないでしょう。）


So...

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner. Play another 18.
（あなたの人生の幸せになくてはならないものにもっと意識をおきなさい。子供と遊びなさい。健康診断のための時間を作りなさい。あなたの大切な人を誘って食事にいきなさい。もう１ラウンド余分にゴルフのラウンドすればいい。）


There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.”
（家を掃除したり、壊れたものを修理する時間はいつでもある。）


"Take care of the golf balls first --the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."
（「ゴルフボール、自分にとって本当に大切なものを優先しなさい。何が大切かを決めなさい。後はただの砂でしかないのだから。」）


One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented.
（一人の生徒がコーヒーは何を表すのかを教授に尋ねました。）


The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked".
（教授は「よく聞いてくれた」と微笑みました。そして、）


"It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."
（「これはあなたの人生がどんなに手一杯に見えても、いつだって友達と１，２杯のコーヒーを飲む時間くらいあるってことを意味しているんだよ。」と。）
